The Senate of Serampore College (University) located in Serampore town of Hoogly district is the first institution in India to be granted the status of a university in 1829. Founded by christian missionaries this university runs academic administration of all its affiliated theological colleges. Several theological colleges and seminaries all over India including Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are affiliated to the Senate of Serampore College. It confers its own degrees in theology under the power vested by the charter and act of Serampur college. Presently this university offers graduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs in theology. The external programs of the SOSC include diploma in christian studies, clinical pastoral counselling and bible translation. Bachelors and Masters degree program in christian studies and doctoral program in ministry.
