Meeting the English language requirements
If your first language is not English you must provide evidence of a satisfactory level of English language proficiency. You can submit your application without an English result and provide this at a later date.
Please Note: If you are an NCEA student, only the NCEA literacy requirement will be acceptable.
The most commonly used English language tests we recognise are as follows:
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.0 in the academic module (with no individual band below 6.0)
Paper-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 (TWE 4.5)
Internet-based TOEFL of 80 with a writing score of 20

Meeting the English language requirements
If your first language is not English you must provide evidence of a satisfactory level of English language proficiency. You can submit your application without an English result and provide this at a later date. Any offer made will be conditional until the English requirement has been met.

The following programmes require higher levels of achievement than the minimum requirements listed above:
Postgraduate Diploma/Master of Public Health - IELTS of 7.5 - must be provided before applications will be considered

As a potential research student, you need to be well-prepared, and show initiative and aptitude. A general, introductory email to a potential supervisor that reveals no knowledge of the specific research areas of the staff member or department is not likely to be taken seriously.

In addition to the main campus at Dunedin the University of Otago has small facilities in Auckland and Wellington (based at the Wellington Centre). The medical schools have larger campuses near Christchurch and Wellington Hospitals. Additionally, the university has the Portobello Marine Laboratory inside Otago Harbour. The university is also affiliated with fourteen residential colleges. The colleges provide accomodation, food, social and welfare services. Most of these cater to first year students, while there is a considerable number of second year and higher year undergraduates.While some teaching is normally undertaken at a college, this generally represents a small percentage of a resident's formal tuition.
Most colleges actively seek to foster a sense of community and academic achievement amongst their members through, variously, intercollegiate competitions, communal dining, apartment groups, traditionalism, independent students' clubs, college events and internal sporting and cultural societies.
Libraries:- The University of Otago has ten libraries: seven based in Dunedin on the main university campus, the Education library in Southland, plus two medical libraries in Wellington and Christchurch. All libraries have wireless access.
•Central Library:- Central Library has over 800,000 print and electronic materials relating to the arts and humanities, commerce, education, physical education, social sciences, and technology.
•Health Science Library:-The Health Sciences libraries are the Medical Library in the Sayers Building, and the Dental library on the ground floor of the Dental School.
•Science Library:- The Science Library is at the north-end of the campus.
•Hocken Library:- The Hocken Library is a research library,archive and art gallery of national significance.
•The Robert Stout Law Library:- is the university's law library and is based in the Richardson Building.
• The Robertson Library:- The Robertson Library is the university's education library and is jointly run by the University of Otago's College of Education and Otago Polytechnic, which is also located near the university's Dunedin campus.

University of Otago Dunedin Student Life and Activities:-
UniCol is famous for its extensive social and activity calendar. The Students' Executive and the University College staff organise a varied programme of social events during the year, beginning with a packed calendar during Orientation Week. Themed parties, the annual ski trip, the UniCol Ball and sporting and cultural interchanges with other colleges all feature on the University College yearly calendar.
Competitions are a highlight of College life and college residents enter and compete with passion and enthusiasm. The famous UniCol winners' trophies and the chance to be immortalised on the Common Room Wall of Fame give our competitions a big profile. Table tennis, foosball, portrait painting, basketball, darts, puzzle making, poker, chess and many other events are regularly contested.
Residents are encouraged and supported to take part in social and sporting events around the campus. UniCol is located close to the university's gymnasium, UniPol, the student union, student theatre and other campus attractions. The Dunedin student district with its wide variety of cafes, shops and street life is a short stroll from University College.
