University of Calcutta informally known as Calcutta University is the public state university and the first institution in South Asia to be established as a multi-disciplinary and secular western university. Recognized as a Five Star university by NAAC and acclaimed as "University with potential for excellence" by the UGC, University of Calcutta is an affiliating and research based university. Presently this university comprises of 65 departments organised into eight faculties of agriculture, arts, commerce, social welfare & business management; education, journalism and library science; engineering & technology, fine arts, music and home science, law and science. Within all state universities in India this university has the highest number of students who have cleared doctoral entrance eligibility exam in sciences conducted by the government of India. The university has 14 campuses spread through the length and breadth of the city of Kolkata and its surburbs. A large number of colleges and institutes were formerly affiliated to the university but have left following gradual restructuring and political transformation. Known for its central facilities and notable initiatives this university strives forward in its commitment to all round excellence and advancement of learning that has remained the same despite various transitions.
