Colgate University New York carefully preserved infrastructure, immaculate grounds, and hillside setting together have consistently earned it the name of the most beautiful in the US. There are 88 buildings, about 10 miles of roads and walkways, and an estimated 2,300 trees (most common are sugar maples and northern red oaks), on the 575-acre campus. West Hall which is the first building to be built on campus was built by student and faculty from the stone available on the campus own quary. The most distinctive building on campus is the Chapel (Colgate Memorial Chapel), which was built in 1918 and is used for lectures, performances, concerts, and religious services. Old Biology Hall was built in 1884 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The two other important landmarks on campus include Longyear Museum of Anthropology and Picker Art Gallery. Greek houses and university housing is provided for students in their first three years.

Colgate’s Outdoor Education Program offers a number of outdoor opportunities, and students can also join any of the other religious, service, special interest or student government clubs. Greek life plays a significant role in student life, representing nearly half of sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students are required to live on campus—which includes Greek houses and university apartments—for their first three years. The university has more than 180 student groups and organizations. Colgate is also known for its active student run media.
Number 13 is considered to be lucky by Colgate University. It is said that Colgate was founded by thirteen men with thirteen dollars, thirteen prayers and thirteen articles. This tradition is expressed in many ways. Colgate's address is 13 Oak Drive, and its zip code is 13346, which begins with 13 and ends with three digits that sum to 13. Konosioni, the senior honor society, is composed of thirteen men and thirteen women. Alumni wear Colgate apparel on every Friday the 13th, which is designated as Colgate Day.
The Colgate Raiders compete in the NCAA Division I Patriot League and are known for their rivalry with the Cornell University Big Red.
