Madras Medical College is one of the oldest higher educational institutes in Asia. It was established in the year 1837 by a group of Scottish missionaries. It has been accredited with A+ grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It is the premier college in India to get autonomy in the year 1978. It is affiliated to the University of Madras.

The college is known for offering a wide range of courses in undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Arts, Sciences, and Commerce, besides undergraduate programs in vocational streams of Archaeology, Musicology and Industrial Fish and Fisheries; and post graduate programs in Social Work (MSW) and Computer Applications (MCA).
