St. Xavier’s College is a Christian minority higher education institute that was established in 1860 by the Society of Jesus. It is one of the 24 University Colleges run by the Jesuits of India. The college holds the unique distinction of being the first autonomous college in West Bengal. It gained autonomy in July 2006. It is affiliated to the University of Calcutta.

The institute has a modest beginning with only 40 students. The programs that are offered by the college are Bachelor of Arts in Hindi, Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Bachelor of Commerce in Account and Finance, Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing Management.
