Medical College & Hospital was founded in the year 1835 as the first institute of European medicine in the sub-continent. Ever since its inception, the college has gained wider recognition across the globe for its continuous efforts of equipping students with thorough knowledge about the field of medicine. The institute is affiliated to the Western Bengal University of Health Sciences and is accredited to Medical Council of India (MCI). Currently, it is maintained and regulated by the Government of West Bengal.
Being one of the finest medical colleges in India, the institute offers a wide range of medical studies. MBBS is the main course of the institute that has been attracting students from different states of the country. The institute is also known for imparting post graduate medical courses in different disciplines that include dermatology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Surgery, Cardiology, Hematology and many more. Medical College & Hospital is located at Bow Bazar in Kolkata. The most striking feature of the campus is the Administrative block with its clock-tower. It houses the Principal's offices, the General Lecture theatre, the largest of the three, and constructed in form of a gallery. The campus also has several blocks that include Ezra hospital, Sir John Anderson Causality block, David Hare block, Eden hospital, Regional institute of Opthalmology and Calcutta school of Tropical medicine.
