Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar came into existence in the year 2008, inheriting the brand name IIT. This fact itself charges the Institute not only to be worthy of its inheritance but also to be distinctive and distinguished on its own by scripting a path towards novelties. Madhusudan Chakraborty is the director of IIT Bhubaneswar since 2009, succeeding acting director, Damodar Acharya.
The institute admits students into B. Tech, M. Tech and Ph.D. programs. IIT Bhubaneswar became the first amongst the eight new IITs to become operational with a sanctioned intake of 40 students each in the disciplines of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

Admissions:
Candidates are admitted through the regular admission channel that is based on the applications received through IIT-JEE/ GATE & JAM entrance test for various programmes.

Facilities:
The institute operates from a number of locations within the city of Bhubaneswar which include Extension Centre of IIT Kharagpur, Toshali Bhawan and Workshop cum Laboratory Complex near IIT Kharagpur Extension Centre for class rooms and laboratory facilities. 
College provides facilities such as huge Wi-Fi enabled campus, centrally air-conditioning auditorium, library, modern cafeteria providing hygienic food, students clubs, dispensary, separate hostels for girls and boys and many other facilities for students to spend their precious years with enthusiasm.
