The institute has always been one of the top 10 engineering schools in India. Initially, BESU was established as the Calcutta Civil Engineering College and on 24th March 1921, it became Bengal Engineering College.
With a modest beginning in 1857, Bengal Engineering and School University (BESU) was started as a Civil engineering institution. Later, in 1932 Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering (1935), Metallurgical Engineering (1939), Architecture (1949) and finally Computer Science & Technology (1982) were introduced. Today, the college has now grown into a well recognized engineering institute acquiring a unique 'institutional equity' with all its incumbent attributes such as excellent infrastructure, holistic curriculum, state of the art pedagogy, an excellent blend of seasoned academicians.
Being a deemed university, it offers excellent education to those students who want enter into the evergreen field of engineering. It imparts four years full time B. Tech with specializations in different branches such as Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrics & Electronics Engineering and Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering. The college also provides B.Arch degree through its Architect program.
All UG programmes, except Architecture, are AICTE approved and NBA accredited. The course on Architecture is approved by the Council of Architecture (COA).
The UG programmes are supported by the different departments (Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences Mathematics, and Humanities) under the Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences and the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences. These departments offer PG and Doctoral programmes only.
Admission to all UG courses are done through the WB-JEE (for Architecture an added requirement is the NATA examination) in the 1st semester. Five percent of the total seats are filled-in from Lateral Entry candidates in the 3rd semester through JELET. A few seats are available for the wards of the defense personnel and some state-government (other than WB) nominated candidates. Moreover, a few foreign students are also admitted with nominations from central government agencies like ICCR. There is no NRI quota.
